Many people search for magic mushrooms Mexico to find out about this mystical experience. Situated in the lush Oaxacan mountains, San José del Pacifico is a digital nomad’s dream: perfect detox opportunities, postcard-ready views, and a unique reason to visit — it’s the magic mushroom capital of Mexico.

Not only are these psychedelic fungi plentiful on the nearby mushroom mountain, but the tourism encompassing these toadstools has become an economic lifeline for the small town.

That said, this charming destination has more to offer than merely mushrooms: digital nomads and expats alike flock here for the town’s unspoiled natural beauty and laid-back atmosphere.

Whether you want to take in some stunning scenery or try something new on Mushroom Mountain — or both! — San José won’t disappoint.

Magic Mushrooms Mexico Experience

San José del Pacifico, Oaxaca is known around the globe as one of the few places you can legally buy magic mushrooms in Mexico. During the mushroom season, which runs from July to October, psychedelic street art and signs directing you to vendors selling mushrooms adorn the town.

The safest way to purchase psychedelic fungi is to visit a local Shaman who can pick a dose tailored to your body and desired experience. Rubi’s is renowned among travelers as the number-one spot to purchase magic mushrooms in Mexico.

While some may argue over whether the mushrooms should be washed before consuming, giving them a quick rinse with water is a good idea. This is just to get rid of any debris from the soil they grew in and ensure that you don’t experience any unpleasant side effects from eating them raw.

Unfortunately, it can be tricky to get your hands on fresh mushrooms from November to June, since this falls outside of the mushroom season.

Many of the magical toadstools for sale during these months may have been preserved or may not even be psychedelic. To make sure you’re getting quality goods during this time, seek recommendations from people in the area.

You can expect to pay between 300-400 pesos — roughly $15 — per dose. But before getting to that part, you’ll need to brush up on your Spanish skills, as English is not widely spoken in this area.

A must-know phrase is hongos, which is the word Mexicans use for magic ‘shrooms — while champiñones are mushrooms that do not contain any psychedelic properties. Additionally, be prepared with the Spanish phrase cuánto cuestan which translates to, “How much do they cost?”

We recommend familiarizing yourself with numbers as well!

The Legality of Psychedelics

The traditional use of hallucinogenic mushrooms by the indigenous communities in Mexico has been decriminalized, in some cases even officially.

But there lies a particularly idiosyncratic peculiarity to San José del Pacifico — it is an independent area where locals make their own set of rules, which unsurprisingly includes the avidly accepted selling and consumption of magic mushrooms for tourists, too.

Despite psychedelics not being wholly legal in the country, authorities have given this tiny village special leniency on using and possessing psilocybin-containing mushrooms, making it much more accessible than in surrounding areas.

Essentially, San José del Pacifico is a safe haven for consuming what is still considered taboo elsewhere in the Mexican region.

Regardless of the lack of permanent police presence in this charming town, it’s important to note that there is no tolerance for outsiders violating the local laws. Reports abound that visitors who attempt to smuggle products such as magic mushrooms out of San José often find themselves under siege by both the National Guard and the Municipal Police forces driving through on the main road.

Those looking to enjoy the natural seasonal abundance of mushrooms are welcome in San José,provided they remain within the town’s boundaries and comply with local laws.

Mexico Visa

For travelers looking to explore Mexico, it is essential to understand the visa requirements for the country.

Generally speaking, American citizens who wish to stay in Mexico for more than 180 days will need a visa from the Mexican Embassy or Consulate. For Europeans, a valid passport is typically all that’s needed for a stay of less than three months.

It’s important to note that some individuals may be required to complete additional paperwork depending on their purpose of travel.

Visa on arrival

Traveling to Mexico is an exciting prospect, but it’s important that travelers know the requirements beforehand to ensure a smooth trip. All visitors to Mexico who plan to stay up to 180 days need a Mexican Tourist Card, even if they are not required to get a Mexican Tourist Visa.

Fortunately, obtaining a Tourist Card is easy; with two options — online and at the point of entry upon arrival — tourists can quickly be on their way. Those opting for online solutions should be aware of how long it takes for the card to arrive before embarking on their journey.

Visa exemption

Mexico is a popular tourist destination for many travelers worldwide, thanks in part to its visa policy.

Citizens of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and most European Union countries can enjoy staying in Mexico without needing a visa — up to 180 days for most countries and 90 days for others.

For those who plan on traveling through the US to get to Mexico, however, it is important to be aware that a US visa may be necessary depending on their nationality. With all these conditions in mind and taken care of beforehand, tourists from around the globe can enjoy all that Mexico has to offer.
